Cultural notes
U Island Shrine is closely associated with the mythology surrounding Inari Okami and his messenger birds, known as 'tsukumogami'. During the Cherry Blossom Festival in late March, shrine-goers can enjoy traditional performances and food stalls featuring tsukumogami-themed treats. The shrine's vermilion torii gate also serves as a popular spot for New Year (Oshogatsu) visits, where visitors can pray for good fortune and prosperity.
Historical note
Founded in 1843 by Tokugawa Ienari, the shrine was originally located on an island in Lake Sai, but was relocated to its current site in 1960.
