Cultural notes

Tsukubasan Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of Amaterasu Omikami, who was said to have descended from heaven to earth on Mt. Tsukuba. According to legend, she hid in a cave within the mountain and created the shrine as an offering to her followers.

Founded in the 8th century, it was originally dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami but later became associated with Tsukiyomi-no-kami, god of the moon and sea.
