TOKUYAMA DAIJINGUU shrine

徳山大神宮

Located in Hokkaido's Matsumae town, Tokuyama Daijinguu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ietsuna, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. The shrine's architecture is characterized by a wooden main hall with a tiled roof, typical of Edo-period structures. In 1991, the shrine was designated as a National Treasure, recognizing its cultural significance.

Cultural notes

As a symbol of the Tokugawa clan's power, the shrine is also associated with the god Inari Okami, patron deity of commerce and industry. During the annual Autumn Leaves Festival (Koyo), visitors can admire the vibrant autumn colors in the surrounding gardens.

Historical note

Built in 1685 during the Edo period, it marked the northern boundary of the Tokugawa shogunate's domain.
