Tenmangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, dedicated to the god of learning and culture, Sugawara no Michizane. Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, visit Tenmangu during the shoulder season (April-May or September-November) when the cherry blossoms are not yet in bloom.
Cultural notes
Tenmangu is closely associated with the Japanese education system and is often visited by students on graduation day. The shrine also hosts various festivals throughout the year, including the Tenmangu Sanja Matsuri in May, which celebrates the god's power to promote learning and culture.
