Suwa-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the same name, revered in Japanese mythology as the god of mountains and forests. Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, the shrine is situated near the town of Sengawa, on the northern slope of Mt. Kintoki. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional style of Jogan-zukuri, with a large torii gate and a wooden shrine hall. Cultural notes
Suwa-jinja Shrine is often visited during the autumnal equinox (shubun), a time when the shrine's mountain god is said to descend from heaven and walk among mortals. This festival, known as 'Sennichi Matsuri', features traditional dances, music, and offerings to the kami.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in the late Nara period, during the reign of Emperor Saga (823-827), making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
