Susanoo Shrine, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of storms and fertility, Susanoo no Mikoto. The shrine's history dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan. Its architectural style reflects the traditional Japanese temple design, with a wooden torii gate and a large vermillion gate. Visitor tip
To avoid waiting in line, visit the shrine during the off-season (February to April or September to November) when it is less crowded.
Cultural notes
As a deity associated with storms, Susanoo Shrine holds an annual festival called 'Susanoo no Matsuri' on October 15th and 16th. The festival celebrates the god's role in bringing fertility and prosperity to the region.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by the fires of the Meiji Restoration period.
