Cultural notes
In Japanese mythology, Sumiyoshi Jinja is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Japan, with some sources tracing its origins back to the 4th century AD. The shrine is also closely tied to the legend of Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful samurai leader who was said to have been favored by the sun goddess herself.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1911 after being destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake.
