Cultural notes

Hachimantai is famous for its associations with Hachiman, who is believed to have been instrumental in Minamoto no Yoritomo's victory at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The shrine also hosts an annual festival (Hachiman Matsuri) on July 26th and 27th, which features traditional dances and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1182 during the Heian period, originally dedicated to the deity Hachiman as the patron god of Minamoto no Yoritomo, who later became the first shogun of Japan.
