Located in Aomori, Iwakiyama Shrine is dedicated to the kami of space and the heavens. The shrine's name, 'Kūkō', roughly translates to 'void storage god'. In Japanese mythology, Kūkō is associated with the god Susuwatari, who embodies the spirit of flight and purification. Visitors can explore the shrine's unique architecture, which features a distinctive tower that resembles a space shuttle. The shrine also hosts the annual Iwakiyama Shrine Festival, where locals dress up in traditional costumes and perform rituals to honor Kūkō.

Cultural notes
Iwakiyama Shrine is connected to the mythological story of Susuwatari's descent from heaven. During the Heian period (794-1185 CE), a bird known as Susuwatari was said to have fallen from the sky and landed on the shrine's grounds, bringing with it divine blessings.
