Located in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, Iwakura Shrine is dedicated to Inari Okami and is famous for its 2,500 vermilion torii gates, creating a tunnel effect as visitors make their way to the main shrine hall. Visitor tip
To avoid crowds, visit early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not shining directly on the torii gates.
Cultural notes
Iwakura Shrine is associated with the legend of a local farmer who, with the help of Inari Okami, was able to increase his rice yields. The shrine's annual festival, held in July, features a traditional dance performance and a ceremony where visitors can tie ribbons to pray for good fortune.
