稲荷神社

Aomori

Located in Aomori Prefecture, the Ise Grand Shrine is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines, dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami and Umezaki no Okami. However, since it is not in Aomori we are referring to the稲荷神社 located there. The shrine is known for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture, with a focus on rice-related kami as the primary enshrined deities.

Visit the nearby Aomori Prefectural Park for stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains, making it a perfect spot for sunset viewing during cherry blossom season.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its association with rice and fertility. In Japanese mythology, Amaterasu Omikami's divine light brings nourishment to crops, while Umezaki no Okami is believed to protect against pests and diseases. During the autumnal equinox festival (shinobazu no matsuri), locals clean the shrine pond and offer food to the kami.
