Located in the city of Yamagata, Shinto Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Japan dedicated to Ise-Shinmei Taisha's Shinto deities. The shrine was founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE) and has undergone several renovations over the centuries. Its main deity, Ise-Shinmei's Shinto god Takamagaharao or more commonly known as Tsukuyomi-no-kami, is enshrined here.

Visitor tip
Visit the shrine's main hall for stunning views of the Yamagata Plain, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Cultural notes
The Tsukuyomi-no-kami is associated with the moon and the god of communication and justice. During the Setsubun festival in February, locals burn embers from bonfires to purify themselves and bring good luck.
Historical note
The shrine was originally a local temple dedicated to the god of thunder and storm before being converted to a Shinto shrine during the Heian period (794-1185 CE).
