Visitor tip
When visiting Eight Horses Temple Shrine, be sure to approach with respect and remove your shoes before entering the main hall. The shrine's wooden torii gate is particularly striking, adorned with carvings depicting scenes from the epic tale of Heike Monogatari.
Cultural notes
This shrine is famous for its vibrant annual festivals, including the Akita Eight Horses Festival which takes place on July 25th. During this celebration, devotees reenact the legend of Prince Nagare's visit to the shrine, culminating in a grand procession and offerings to Hachiman-gu.
Historical note
The shrine was established in 718 CE during the Nara period, serving as a key stopover for the construction of the Odawara Castle. It is said that Hachiman-gu, the god of war, descended upon this site to protect the samurai forces of Prince Nagare.
