Nikko's famous Toshogu Shrine was not the only prominent Shinto shrine of its time in Japan. Hoko-ji Taisha in Niigata Prefecture boasts a long history dating back to 718, but Akita's own Akita Sangatsu Taishaa is often overlooked, with origins tracing back to 718 as well. Despite being overshadowed by the more famous Nikko Toshogu, this shrine holds its own significance within Japanese Shintoism.

Cultural notes
Akita Sangatsu Taisha is dedicated to the Shinto deities of spring and fertility, known as 'Sangatsu-tai'. The shrine's architecture reflects its connection to these seasonal spirits, featuring elements like cherry blossom motifs and seasonal decorations. Visitors can also participate in traditional spring festivals, such as the 'Hachinohe matsuri', which celebrates the arrival of spring.
Historical note
Originally established in 718, Akita Sangatsu Taisha was rebuilt and renovated multiple times over the centuries due to various fires and natural disasters.
