Cultural notes
In the spring, locals hold tea ceremonies (Chanoyu) in the North Garden, a centuries-old tradition. Okuninushi no Ōkami is also associated with the legend of Matsuri, a mythical deer that wandered the Kyoto area before becoming the shrine's symbol.
Historical note
The current shrine was rebuilt in 1874 after being destroyed by fire in 1869.
