The Matsuo Shrine, located in the heart of Kyoto, is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines and a sacred site dedicated to the kami Matsuo no Okami. Dedicated to the protection of children and young women, it has been an important stop for travelers on the famous Nijoen-ji pilgrimage route since its founding during the Heian period (794-1185).
