The Kusuno-no-Kami Shrine, dedicated to the god of disease and misfortune, is a historic Shinto temple located in Akita Prefecture. The shrine was originally built in 1885 but its origins date back to the Heian period. According to local legend, the shrine was founded by Emperor Murakami as a way to protect his soldiers from illness and injury during a time of great turmoil.

Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its association with the spirit of a female demon known as 'Kusuno-no-Kami' or 'Wicked Woman'. According to legend, she haunts the area and can be appeased through offerings of sake, rice, and fruit. During the annual Kusunobata Festival, locals honor the shrine by wearing white clothing and performing rituals to ward off evil spirits.
