高田天神社

High Altitude Shrine, a historic Shinto shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture, was established to enshrine the kami of Mt. Haruna, which stands at an impressive height of over 1,000 meters. The shrine is dedicated to the worship of Inari Okami and the god of agriculture, Amaterasu Omikami. Its unique architecture reflects a mix of traditional and modern styles.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine at dawn or dusk for a serene experience, as these are the times when the Inari torii gates are most beautifully illuminated.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage, and during the Autumn Leaves Festival (Koyo), visitors can admire the vibrant colors of the surrounding maple trees. Inari Okami is also revered by farmers in the region for his blessings on crops.

Founded during the Edo period (1603-1868) by the Tokugawa shogunate to promote Shintoism and unify Japanese culture.
