Miyagahara Shrine, located in the town of Kakegawa in Shizuoka Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of fire and agriculture, Hachiman. The shrine's main hall was built during the Edo period, with a distinctive tiled roof and a vermilion gate that is said to have been gifted by the great samurai Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the beauty of Miyagahara Shrine's architecture, arrive early in the morning to see the sunlight reflect off the vermilion gate.
Cultural notes
Miyagahara Shrine is also famous for its connection to the mythical bird Ryujin, which is said to have been born from the god Hachiman's tears. The shrine hosts an annual festival in May to celebrate this mythological connection.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in its current form in 1842, after the original shrine was destroyed by fire.
