八幡神社

Located in the heart of Ibaraki Prefecture,八幡神社 is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a prominent kami associated with storms and fertility. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as one of Japan's oldest shrines, dating back to the 7th century. Its distinctive Haniwa, stone statues used for protection, can be seen standing guard around the shrine grounds.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Susanoo-no-Mikoto is also revered as a patron deity of fishing and agriculture. The shrine's annual Hachiman Matsuri festival, held in May, commemorates the arrival of Susanoo-no-Mikoto at the shrine.
