Kumano Sanzan, a sacred mountain range in western Japan, is the source of spiritual power for Koyasan Kumano Otani Hongu Shrine, located in Kumamoto Prefecture, but nearby Kyoto's Kumano Kumano no Miko Taisha was built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) to honor the Kumano kami. However, the Kumano shrine in Kyoto is Kumano Kumano no Miko Taisha which honors the three primary deities of the Kumano region: Kasuga no Kami, Mika-no-Kami and Mochi no Kami.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's historic significance, visit during Cherry Blossom season (late March to early April) when the surrounding gardens are in full bloom.

Cultural notes

The Kumano Taisha Kumano Kumano no Miko Taisha is one of Japan's most ancient Shinto shrines and was an important center for Buddhist and Shinto rituals. It is said that the shrine's architecture was inspired by Chinese temple designs, a blend of Shinto and Buddhist traditions.
