Located in the scenic Sakhalin prefecture, the ancient Tsuruga Shrine, also known as Higaki-san shrine, has been revered by locals and travelers alike since its origins date back to the Jomon period (14th-3rd century BC). Dedicated to the Shinto deities of the Sea and Fertility, this sacred site is believed to be a gateway between the human world and the spirit realm. The unique wooden torii gate and natural stone walls of the shrine's compound reflect its deep connection with nature and the land.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

The shrine is associated with the legend of the sea goddess Otohime and is said to be the site where she descended from heaven. Locals still perform rituals to ensure safe passage for fishing vessels and to ask for blessings on their harvests. During the autumnal festival, visitors can enjoy traditional performances, such as Kabuki theater and traditional dance.
