Cultural notes

Middle Village Shrine is associated with Nakatsumi Okami, a kami revered for its power to purify water. During the summer solstice festival, known as Tanabata, visitors bring paper lanterns adorned with prayers and messages to hang on the shrine's wooden fence, hoping to receive wishes.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in the 17th century during the Edo period as a way to purify the waters of the nearby Noboribetsu Onsen.
