Located in the scenic city of Sapporo, Hokkaido's Residence of Warmth Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity Susanoo, as well as Tsukuyomi and the Sun Goddess Amaterasu. This unique shrine complex dates back to the Heian period, featuring a distinctive octagonal tower known as the 'Shinobazu-ku', which is believed to be built from wood that was once part of the legendary 'Fusen' tree. Cultural notes
As a Shinto deity, Susanoo is often associated with storms and the sea. In traditional Japanese folklore, he was said to have created the islands of Japan by slapping his wooden fish with his magical club, creating land from the ocean's surface. The shrine's unique octagonal tower is thought to symbolize this mythological creation story.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1665 by the Tokugawa shogunate following its destruction during the Genroku era.
