The Kinryu-ji Shrine, dedicated to Kinryu, a Shinto deity associated with fertility and prosperity, is a serene oasis in the heart of Akita Prefecture. Established in 1796, the shrine is famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gate, which symbolizes the sacred bond between heaven and earth. Visitors can admire the shrine's tranquil gardens, filled with cherry blossom trees and traditional Japanese maples.

Visitor tip

Bring a small gift of sake or fruit to make an offering at the torii gate, as is customary when visiting Kinryu-ji Shrine.

Cultural notes

As one of the shrines associated with the Shishigami ( wind god), Kinryu-ji Shrine is said to be connected to the mythology surrounding Akita's windy climate. During cherry blossom season, visitors can participate in traditional tea ceremonies and festive events, celebrating the arrival of spring.
