Ko no Iwai no Miya, or ancient 'Waterfall Gate Shrine' is a Shinto shrine located in the mountainous region of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Dedicated to the kami of the waterfall and the nearby forest, the shrine embodies the harmony between nature and human life. Its architecture reflects traditional Japanese design with the main hall resembling a wooden gate. The shrine's history dates back to the Edo period.

Cultural notes

According to local legend, Ko no Iwai no Miya is believed to be an ancestral shrine for the region's founding family, the Date clan. The shrine also hosts a spring festival, Hoshizuka Matsuri, which celebrates the arrival of spring with rituals and offerings to the kami.
