Cultural notes
This shrine is famous for its unique festival, the 'Akita Tanabata' which takes place in July. The event honors the kami associated with the river that runs through the city and features a bonfire ritual to purify the soul. Hachiman's role as a god of war is also reflected in the shrine's annual 'Hachiman Matsuri', where warriors pay their respects to the deity.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built as an imperial villa, with the current main hall constructed in 1653 during the Edo period.
