Cultural notes

Dan-Nan Tenman-ji is also associated with the legend of Sugawara no Michizane, a revered Shinto deity known as the 'God of Learning' or 'Minamotonokami'. According to myth, Michizane was exiled from Kyoto after being falsely accused of treason and later became the god of education and wisdom.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 946 CE by Emperor Ichijo, making it one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines.
