Tsuruga Shrine, located in the town of Koka, Shiga Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest and most revered shrines dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu (Ōmikami). Dedicated to the protection of the town and its inhabitants, Tsuruga Shrine is known for its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens. The shrine's primary deity is Amaterasu, but it also enshrines several other kami, including the Shinto god of fertility, Susanoo, and the storm god, Raijin.

Cultural notes
Tsuruga Shrine is known for its unique 'Ōmikami-zukuri' architectural style, which features a grand hall dedicated to Amaterasu. The shrine also hosts an annual festival (Ōmisoka) on December 31st to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one, in honor of Amaterasu's role as a goddess of time and change.
