Located in Hyogo Prefecture, Eight Horse Temple Shrine is a prominent Shinto site dedicated to the worship of the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Inari Okami. The shrine's name 'Hachi-Ba-Tsukaya' literally translates to 'Eight Horses' or 'Eight Post Horses', reflecting its historical connection to horse racing. Built in 1557, the shrine has undergone numerous renovations and expansions over the centuries, incorporating traditional Japanese architectural styles such as the hippon-style shrine hall.

Cultural notes

Susanoo-no-Mikoto, one of Japan's most prominent deities, is also enshrined here, often depicted as a powerful storm god. Inari Okami, the Shinto deity revered for rice and industry, shares the shrine with Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The shrine hosts an annual Eight Horse Festival in December, where participants wear traditional clothing and participate in horse-themed games.

The Eight Horse Temple Shrine was built in 1557 during the Momoyama period by the Hosokawa clan.
