Shiga

Dayo Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the Japanese River, which runs through the city of Echizen. Located in the town of Katsuyama, Shiga Prefecture, the shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Dayo Shrine is also famous for its association with the Japanese River kami, which is said to have been born from a spring located within the shrine grounds. The shrine is also visited during the annual Echizen Matsuri festival, where visitors can see traditional dances and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was built during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), making it one of the oldest shrines in the Echizen region.
