Aiðatagū no Miya, the Love Shrine in Omi-Hachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, is dedicated to Amaterasu Ōmikami, the Shinto sun goddess and the most important deity of the Japanese pantheon. The shrine was built in 757 AD during the Nara period and rebuilt in 1568 during the Sengoku period. It is known for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture.

Visitor tip

To appreciate the shrine's beauty, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not directly overhead, as the high sun can damage the delicate gardens.

The shrine is famous for its love-themed festivals, particularly the 'Ai Matsuri' (Love Festival) held annually on February 14th, which is dedicated to Amaterasu's role in matchmaking. The shrine is also known for its unique 'omiyage' (souvenir shops) where visitors can purchase traditional sweets and gifts.
