熊野神社

Miyagi

Seto Shrine, located in the scenic Hiraizumi city of Miyagi Prefecture, is dedicated to the Shinto god Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his sister Kaguya-hime, who was transformed into a moon goddess. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as a major pilgrimage site during the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Its wooden structures are believed to be some of the oldest remaining in Japan.

Cultural notes

Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the storm god, is said to have been a fierce warrior who was exiled from the land by his brother-in-law, Amaterasu. This mythological tale explains why he is revered here in Hiraizumi, where strong winds are believed to occur during certain months of the year.

Historical note

Founded in 746 CE by Emperor Shomu, who enshrined Susanoo-no-Mikoto's statue here.
