Located in the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, Katsunehikari-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of agriculture and fertility, Katsunehikari-no-kami. The shrine's main hall was rebuilt in 1955 after being damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Visitor tip
Visitors can purchase a token called 'emakimono' at the shrine, which is used to pray for good luck and prosperity. Place it in a wish box or leave it on an altar, and your wishes will be carried to the kami.
Cultural notes
Katsunehikari-no-kami is often associated with rice fields and agriculture. The shrine holds a festival called 'Shinshou Matsuri' in July to celebrate the god's power to bring forth life-giving rains. This festival features traditional performances, food stalls, and games.
