Located in the scenic Rishiri Island, Hokkaido's northernmost island, Toyomire Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice and harvest, Toyomizure Hachiman. The shrine's architecture is characteristic of Kamakura period style, with a large torii gate and a wooden pagoda. According to legend, the shrine was founded by Prince Naganari in 1183, during the Gempei War.

Cultural notes

Toyomire Shrine is known for its unique festival tradition called 'Shinobazu-utage,' where locals dress up in traditional clothing and reenact the mythological story of Toyomizure Hachiman's birth. The shrine is also famous for its 'yatai' (food stalls) which serve local specialties such as crab and seafood.
