Located in Akita Prefecture, Village Town Taiho Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami, Raijin, god of thunder and lightning. Visitor tip
Try visiting Taiho Shrine early in the morning to witness the traditional purification ritual of 'Misogi' performed by the shrine priests.
Cultural notes
As Raijin is the god of thunder and lightning, the shrine's autumn festival, 'Aki Matsuri', features dramatic performances depicting Raijin's battles with other deities. Locals also believe that visiting Taiho Shrine during a thunderstorm can ward off bad luck for the rest of the year.
Historical note
Founded during the Edo period, the shrine was rebuilt after a fire in 1633.
