Cultural notes
Ika Musu Shrine is famous for its association with local folklore, particularly the legend of Ika Musu's ability to grant safe passage to boats traversing Lake Biwa. During the annual Setsubun festival in February, visitors can participate in a traditional ritual where they scatter beans to ward off evil spirits.
Historical note
Founded in 744 CE as a Buddhist temple, it was later converted to Shinto in 1600 CE.
