Miyagi

Located in the city of Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Eighteen Hara Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of the sea and storms, Susuwatari. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens, historic architecture, and connection to the region's maritime heritage. Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall, which features a striking vermillion torii gate, as well as the adjacent Kesennuma Harbor and Museum.

Cultural notes

Susuwatari, the kami enshrined at Eighteen Hara Shrine, is also revered as a god of fishermen and sailors. The shrine hosts an annual Summer Festival (, Natsu Matsuri) in July, which features traditional dances, food stalls, and boat races.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1868 by the local fisherman's guild.
