Cultural notes
Ame-no-Ya-kusa is associated with the rice deity, Amaterasu-Ōmikami, and is considered an important site for good harvests and fertility. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in spring to celebrate the arrival of summer, where visitors can participate in traditional rituals and games.
Historical note
Founded in 718 CE by Emperor Monmu during the Nara period, it is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan.
