Cultural notes
As one of Japan's oldest and most important shrines, Sendai's Amaterasu Shrine is also connected to the mythology of Matsushima, a sacred island in Miyagi Prefecture believed to be the sun goddess's palace. The shrine's honden is adorned with distinctive ceramic tiles called 'satile,' which are said to have been gifted by the emperor.
Historical note
The shrine was established in 718 CE during the Nara period.
