Located in the city of Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, Hieizan Iseji shrine is one of Japan's most scenic shrines. Dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war and patron deity of the Taira clan, it was originally a Buddhist temple established during the Heian period.

Visitor tip
Take a stroll through the shrine's beautiful gardens and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can also try some of the local specialties, such as hot springs and delicious Kusatsu beef, at one of the nearby onsen (hot spring resorts).
Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine, Hieizan Iseji is closely tied to the mythology of Hachiman, who is said to have appeared at the shrine in disguise to guide Emperor Saga.
