Cultural notes
Hie Shrine is famous for its association with the legendary yurei, vengeful spirits said to haunt the shrine's grounds. According to legend, a samurai who was unable to repay his debts to the deity Sakaha no Okami was transformed into a yurei, doomed to roam the earth in search of redemption.
