The Eight-Horizon Shrine, located in the heart of Sendai, is a revered Shinto site dedicated to the deity Susanoo no Mikoto. This ancient shrine dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE) and boasts an impressive architecture that reflects its rich history. The shrine's primary enshrined deity is Susano-o, the storm god and brother of Amaterasu.

Cultural notes

The Eight-Horizon Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Susanoo no Mikoto, who allegedly destroyed a rival deity's shrine and created the ocean. The shrine also features an impressive torii gate and a unique architectural style influenced by Kamakura-period designs.

Historical note

The shrine was re-established in 1662 by Lord Date Masamune, a prominent daimyo of the Sendai Domain.
