河原神社

Shiga

River origin shrine in the city of Omi, Shiga Prefecture, dedicated to the kami of the river and its surrounding environment. The shrine's main hall is designed in the traditional 'hira-mitsu' style, with a distinctive red tile roof. Visitor tip

Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the nearby Katsura River, which is said to be the original source of the river that the shrine is dedicated to. A small wooden bridge crosses over the river at the shrine's entrance.

Cultural notes

According to local legend, the shrine's kami was responsible for protecting the local fishermen and providing them with a bountiful harvest. During the Hina Matsuri festival, dolls representing the kami are displayed in the main hall, symbolizing its connection to the river and its inhabitants.

Historical note

Founded in 1348 during the Nanboku-ch\u0301 period, the shrine was rebuilt several times due to damage from floods and wars.
