Rinbeu Hachiman-gu is a Shinto shrine located in Akita, dedicated to the god of war Hachiman. The shrine's main hall was built during the Heian period (around 900 AD) and features a traditional Japanese architecture style. Visitors can explore the shrine's grounds, including several historic monuments and burial sites dating back to the Edo period. To honor the kami, visitors are advised to bring a prayer scroll (emakimono) and tie it to a wooden wish stick.

Visitor tip
To avoid being turned away by the shrine's gate gods (tomonokami), visitors should bow twice upon arrival and take off their shoes before proceeding.
Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, Rinbeu Hachiman-gu is closely associated with the god's role as patron of warriors. The shrine is also believed to be the site where a famous poet and scholar, Fujiwara no Toshitsugu, offered prayers for his deceased son.
