Nyonoshinsha, the Bear God Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the worship of the bear deity in Niyota-gun, Niigata Prefecture. As one of Japan's oldest shrines, it is believed to have been established in the 8th century during the Nara period. The shrine's name literally translates to 'Bear God Shrine.'

Visitor tip
Visitors can try a special bear-themed omiyage, or souvenir, at the shrine shop.
Cultural notes
Nyonoshinsha is closely associated with the local Ainu people and their traditional practices. The shrine's main hall features an impressive bear wooden statue, which is believed to ward off evil spirits. During the annual spring festival, a massive wooden bear effigy is constructed on the shrine grounds.
