Gimei-jinja, located in the city of Moriyama, Shiga Prefecture, is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami Ooe no Imasumi. Visitor tip
Visit Gimei-jinja early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid crowds and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. The shrine is also open 24 hours during the Ooe-zakura festival in May, which celebrates the blooming of rare cherry blossom trees.
Cultural notes
As one of Japan's oldest shrines, Gimei-jinja is believed to be an important site for ancestral worship and purification rituals. The shrine is also associated with the legend of the 'Mori no Kanashibari,' or 'Forest Strands,' a mythical rope said to bind the forests together.
Historical note
Gimei-jinja was rebuilt in 1065 CE after its original structure burned down, and again in 1629 CE.
