Cultural notes

Sanbashi Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of Ryujin, the sea dragon who is said to reside in the waters off Ibaraki. During the annual Sea Dragon Festival (, kaijin matsuri) held in July, locals honor Ryujin by releasing lanterns onto the ocean.

Historical note

Founded in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), Sanbashi Shrine has been an important cultural and spiritual center for the local community.
