Potsu Hime Shrine, dedicated to the kami Potsu Hime, is located in Katsuyama City, Shiga Prefecture. As a regional shrine of the Kaga region, it showcases the traditional architecture and design elements characteristic of the area. The shrine's wooden structures and ornate torii gate reflect its historical significance as an important stopover for travelers on the Japan Alps' Nakasendo highway.

Visitor tip
When visiting, try some of the local specialties like houtou (hot pot) at one of the nearby restaurants and enjoy a bowl while watching the sunset over the Japan Alps.
Cultural notes
Potsu Hime Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of the region's legendary creatures, such as the kitsune (fox spirits). The shrine is also famous for its beautiful autumn foliage, which attracts many visitors during the fall season. Additionally, the shrine hosts an annual festival, the Nakasendo Matsuri, in honor of Potsu Hime and other regional kami.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1869 after being destroyed during the Boshin War.
