Visitor tip

For a more immersive experience, consider visiting during the annual Kashima Shrine Festival (May), which features traditional dances and food stalls along the bay.

Cultural notes

Kashima Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Emperor Jimmu, who was said to have visited the shrine on his way from the sacred island of Honshu. The shrine's architecture also reflects its coastal location, with a characteristic 'sori-gawa' (slope-shaped) floor plan that helps to deflect water.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1062 by the powerful Taira clan.
